Renowned security analyst and counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, has revealed a troubling development in Kwara State—nine inmates have escaped from a Juvenile Correctional Centre in a dramatic jailbreak that has sparked intense security concerns and a full-scale manhunt.
Taking to his official X handle, Makama reported that the incident occurred on the night of Friday, April 19, at the Juvenile Correctional Centre in Oko Erin, Ilorin. According to credible intelligence sources, the breach was reported around 10:00 PM by a staff member of the facility, Joseph Issa, who promptly alerted authorities.
The Kwara State Police Command responded swiftly to the alarm, deploying officers to the scene to assess the situation and initiate search operations. In the course of their immediate efforts, one of the fleeing inmates—15-year-old Abdul Raman Misa—was successfully tracked down and re-arrested. He has since been returned to the centre.
The identities of the remaining eight escapees are being withheld for security reasons as the search intensifies. Police and other security agencies have launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape, raising questions about lapses in facility security and internal oversight.
This incident adds to growing concerns over the safety and security of correctional centres across Nigeria, particularly those housing vulnerable or high-risk youth.
Authorities are urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that could lead to the recapture of the fugitives.
More updates will follow as the investigation unfolds.
