Tragedy in the Fields: Swarm of Bees Kills Farmer, Leaves Two Critically Injured in Osun State

A tragic incident unfolded on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Olobe Farm in Igbajo, Osun State, where a swarm of bees viciously attacked a group of farmers, resulting in the death of one and leaving two others critically injured.

The deceased has been identified as Mr. Abideen Olabiyi, a resident of the Alalade compound in Ada. He reportedly succumbed to severe stings sustained during the bee attack, while his companions—Mr. Solomon Kingsley and Chief Olusegun Alalade, also from the same compound—barely escaped with their lives and are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility in Ada.

SaharaReporters obtained a police situation report from the Otan Ayegbaju Division on Saturday, which confirmed the heartbreaking incident. According to the report, a relative of the victims, Mr. Babasanjo Alalade, raised the alarm after the three men failed to return from the farm.

The police report read in part:
“On Friday, 18th April 2025, at about 4:45 PM, one Babasanjo Alalade of Alalade Compound, Ada, reported that three of his brothers—Abideen Olabiyi, Solomon Kingsley, and Chief Olusegun Alalade—had gone to their farmland in Olobe, Igbajo, when they were suddenly attacked by a massive swarm of bees. Tragically, Mr. Abideen Olabiyi lost his life on the spot, while the other two managed to flee with serious injuries. Police detectives visited the scene, took photographs, and evacuated the deceased’s body, which has been deposited at the Healthy Paradise Mortuary in Ikirun for autopsy.”

This disturbing event has thrown the quiet farming community of Ada into mourning. Residents expressed shock and disbelief over the rare and horrifying nature of the attack, calling it a grim reminder of the unpredictable dangers faced by farmers in their daily quest to earn a living.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are urging local farmers to remain cautious, especially as the dry season ends and insect activity increases.

As the community grieves the loss of a hardworking farmer, prayers and hopes are with the surviving victims for a swift and complete recovery.
