According to the BBC, authorities located Sullivan unharmed in a township in Gqeberha on Tuesday evening, nearly five days after his abduction. The breakthrough came after a joint task force, led by South Africa’s elite crime-fighting unit, the Hawks, acted on credible intelligence that pinpointed the location of the hostage.
In a statement on Wednesday, Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Avele Fumba detailed the tense moments leading up to the confrontation. “As our team approached the property, the suspects attempted to flee in a vehicle, opening fire on our officers. In the exchange that followed, three unidentified suspects were fatally wounded,” Fumba said.
