In a bold and emphatic statement, the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has declared that the safety of any individual or group entering the state without official notification or clearance cannot be guaranteed.
The governor’s stern warning was issued on Monday through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, in a press release titled, “Notice Regarding Unscheduled Visit to Benue State.” The statement sent shockwaves through political circles and humanitarian agencies alike, especially those considering impromptu visits to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the state.
Governor Alia emphasized that any such visits—particularly to sensitive areas like IDP camps—must first receive express approval from the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA). He cautioned that the era of random visits without due protocol is over, noting that such actions could inadvertently trigger political tension or disrupt the fragile peace in the region.
“The Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, wishes to inform the public that he is not expecting any August visitor to the state today,” the statement read. “He is currently engaged in high-profile meetings with key state actors to discuss critical issues affecting our state.”
Governor Alia further warned that any form of visit that morphs into a political gathering or causes unrest would not be tolerated. He urged security agencies to remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring that law and order are maintained.
“For anyone considering a visit to Benue State without the Governor’s knowledge, it is imperative to reconsider such plans, as the safety and security of individuals in this regard cannot be guaranteed,” he stated.
The governor reiterated that all individuals or groups intending to visit IDP camps must obtain written approval from BSEMA in advance. “We urge security agents and the public to take note of this announcement and maintain peace and order in the state,” the statement concluded.
With this decisive stance, Governor Alia is drawing a firm line against unsanctioned visits that may compromise the security and stability of Benue State—sending a clear message that protocol, planning, and peace must take precedence over politics and populism.
