In a chilling revelation that underscores the evolving tactics of terrorist groups in Nigeria, troops of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) have arrested two suspected members of the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) who had infiltrated Plateau State disguised as tailors in a bid to establish sleeper cells.
The suspects, identified as Abdulkadir Dalhatu and Ubaidu Hassan, both 25 years old, were apprehended in Yelwa, Shendam Local Government Area, during a high-stakes, intelligence-led operation between April 11 and 12. According to a statement released Saturday in Jos by OPSH spokesperson, Major Samson Zakhom, the duo were on a covert mission under direct orders from a senior ISWAP commander to lay the groundwork for terror operations in both Plateau and Bauchi States.
“These individuals posed as innocent tailors, but our investigations revealed their sinister mission to set up ISWAP cells and destabilise the region,” said Major Zakhom. “Their arrest is a significant blow to the terrorists’ network.”
The suspects are currently in military custody undergoing further interrogation and are expected to face prosecution under Nigerian law.
In a separate development, troops from Sector 4 OPSH carried out a daring raid on a known criminal enclave in Mazat Village, Barkin Ladi LGA, on April 11. Although the primary suspect escaped before the troops arrived, a search of the hideout led to the recovery of a loaded AK-47 rifle (registration number 23402) and a magazine. Efforts to track down the fugitive are ongoing.
A day later, on April 12, troops from Sector 2 OPSH laid an ambush along the Pinau-Bangalala Road in Wase Local Government Area, following credible intelligence on bandit movements. Contact was made with the criminals, resulting in a fierce exchange of fire. One bandit was neutralised on the spot, while others escaped, likely with bullet wounds. Troops recovered a locally fabricated pistol during a follow-up sweep.
Major Zakhom praised the synergy between the military and local communities, attributing the recent operational successes to timely intelligence from vigilant residents.
“Our recent breakthroughs have been made possible through the invaluable support and trust of the public. We call on communities to remain alert and continue cooperating with security forces to eliminate criminal threats,” he said.
Operation SAFE HAVEN, a special military task force, remains resolute in its mission to stamp out terrorism, banditry, and communal violence across Plateau and neighboring states. With these recent victories, the message to terrorists and criminals is clear: the days of impunity are over.
