Nigeria has lost a giant of the beautiful game. Former Super Eagles coach and football legend, Christian Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” has passed away at the age of 74.
The revered sportsman reportedly died on Saturday, though the specific circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear at the time of this report.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by his longtime friend and 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) teammate, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami.
In an emotional tribute, Odegbami said: “I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and teammate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s history, has passed on. Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, gave me the sad news a few minutes ago. May ‘Onyim’ find peace with Our Creator in Heaven and console his family.”
Christian Chukwu’s name is etched in gold in the annals of Nigerian football. He captained the national team to its first-ever AFCON title in 1980, and later served as the head coach of the Super Eagles, bringing leadership, discipline, and tactical brilliance to the helm of Nigerian football.
His calm demeanor and football intellect earned him widespread respect both on and off the pitch. He was a mentor to many and a symbol of resilience and national pride. His passion for the game and dedication to Nigeria’s sporting excellence made him a beloved figure in the hearts of millions.
In 2021, rumors of his death spread like wildfire, prompting Chukwu to make a public denial during his 70th birthday celebrations. “I am terribly embarrassed with this news that I am dead. Several people have been calling me from across the world since the news broke. I am still investigating the source of the story,” he had said at the time, showing his characteristic wit and strength.
