A simmering land dispute turned deadly on Monday as violent clashes erupted between residents of Otor-Ewu in Ughelli South Local Government Area and Edjekota in Ughelli North, Delta State, leaving at least three people dead and several others reportedly injured.
SaharaReporters gathered that the chaos was sparked by a long-standing land dispute that reignited when members of a family from Edjekota allegedly encroached on the contested land. What began as a seemingly routine land squabble quickly spiraled into a tragic confrontation.
Local sources disclosed that in a bid to avoid a direct altercation, residents of Otor-Ewu opted for a lawful route by alerting the police to intervene and arrest the alleged trespassers. However, the situation took a dangerous turn upon the arrival of security operatives.
“As the police arrived and attempted to apprehend the individuals, word spread like wildfire across Edjekota,” a community source told SaharaReporters. “In a matter of minutes, youths from Edjekota mobilised en masse, erecting barricades and blocking access roads to prevent the arrests.”
Tensions boiled over as both sides engaged in a brutal face-off. The ensuing violence left three people dead, with unconfirmed reports suggesting more could be injured or missing. According to the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the area, one of the deceased has been identified as a resident of Edjekota, while the identities of the remaining two victims remain unclear—raising questions about whether they belonged to Edjekota or Otor-Ewu.
“This is a tragedy that could have been avoided,” the source lamented. “We have always tried to pursue peace and resolve this issue through legal channels. But now, innocent lives have been lost.”
Confirming the incident, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, stated that investigations were already underway to ascertain the full details and bring those responsible to justice. “We are aware of the incident and an active investigation is ongoing,” he said.
The volatile nature of land disputes in Delta State has once again been highlighted by this deadly encounter, underscoring the urgent need for conflict resolution mechanisms and more proactive intervention from local and state authorities.
As the affected communities mourn their dead and tensions remain high, all eyes are now on security agencies and community leaders to prevent further bloodshed and restore calm to the area.
