BREAKING: PSC Appoints Agbonika as Edo Police Commissioner, Tasks Him with Averting Reprisal Attacks After Uromi Lynching

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has appointed Monday Agbonika, a seasoned officer from the Police Mounted Troop, as the new Commissioner of Police (CP) for Edo State. His appointment comes at a critical time following the recent lynching of at least 16 northern hunters in Uromi, an incident that has heightened tensions and raised fears of retaliatory violence.

Agbonika replaces CP Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin, who previously held the position. The appointment was confirmed on Thursday after a posting interview conducted by the PSC, presided over by its Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu. The panel also included retired Supreme Court Justice Paul Adamu Galumje and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, the Commission’s Secretary.

During the confirmation process, the PSC leadership underscored the urgency of Agbonika’s new role, charging him with swiftly addressing the security challenges plaguing Edo State. The Commission emphasized that his handling of the suspects arrested in connection with the Uromi lynching would be pivotal in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

“You must act decisively to prevent further violence. The confidence of the people must be won through proactive policing, thorough investigations, and effective engagement with critical stakeholders,” the Commission warned.

With mounting concerns over potential reprisal attacks, Agbonika has been directed to ensure that law enforcement agencies maintain a firm but fair approach to justice, reassuring all communities that their safety remains a top priority.

In response, CP Agbonika assured the PSC that he would uphold the rule of law, collaborate closely with the Inspector General of Police, and adopt a strategic approach to policing in Edo State.

“I am committed to restoring peace, enforcing justice without bias, and fostering trust between the police and the people,” he pledged.

With over 32 years of service, Agbonika brings a wealth of experience in law enforcement, investigations, operations, administration, and public relations. Before his appointment, he served as Commissioner of Police for the Mounted Troop at Force Headquarters. His impressive career includes stints as Commissioner of Police Communications (Operations), Deputy Commissioner for Interpol at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, and Area Commander across various regions in Nigeria.

As Edo State grapples with rising security concerns, all eyes are now on Agbonika to see how he navigates these challenges. His ability to maintain law and order, curb criminal activities, and prevent retaliatory violence will define his legacy as the state’s top cop.

With the weight of expectation on his shoulders, Agbonika steps into this high-stakes role, where every decision could mean the difference between peace and chaos.
