BREAKING: Multiple Nigerian Police Officers Injured as Patrol Vehicle Plunges into Gully on Aba/Owerri Road

A routine police patrol turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy on Tuesday morning when a Toyota Sienna transporting Nigerian Police Force personnel was involved in a devastating auto crash along the Aba/Owerri Road.

The exact cause of the accident remains uncertain, but eyewitnesses recounted that the police vehicle somersaulted multiple times before plunging into a deep gully, leaving several officers critically injured.

A harrowing video obtained by SaharaReporters captures the aftermath of the crash, showing at least three officers lying motionless on the ground while others were feared to be trapped inside the wreckage. The distressing footage also reveals frantic efforts by bystanders and emergency responders to rescue the victims.

One particularly unsettling moment from the video shows an officer, despite sustaining severe injuries, desperately inquiring about his rifle—a stark testament to the intense pressures and instincts ingrained in law enforcement personnel even in moments of distress.

Emergency responders and concerned citizens swiftly mobilized to provide first aid and extricate those trapped within the vehicle. The extent of the injuries sustained by the officers remains unclear, but the incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety conditions of security operatives while on duty.

When contacted, the Abia State Police Command’s spokesperson, Maureen Chioma Chinaka, stated that she was awaiting an official report before providing further details.

“When I get the official brief, I will let you know,” she said.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, DSP Henry Okoye, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report.

This accident comes just a day after a tragic road crash claimed the life of an officer from “Operation Crush,” a Joint Task Force in Abia State. According to a statement by the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Abia State Command, Ngozi Ezeoma, the Sunday accident along the Umuahia-Bende Road was attributed to brake failure, leaving one officer dead and eight others seriously injured.

As investigations into the latest accident unfold, concerns grow over the roadworthiness of security vehicles and the need for improved safety measures for law enforcement officers who risk their lives daily to maintain public order.
