The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 20-year-old man suspected of brutally stabbing to death a security guard assigned to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II during Eid prayers in Kano.
According to a police statement, the suspect launched the fatal attack at the Eid ground while the guard was carrying out his duty of protecting the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, after the prayers on Sunday. The assailant, whose identity remains undisclosed pending further investigation, was swiftly apprehended by security operatives at the scene.
In the tragic incident, another security officer sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at Murtala Muhammad Hospital in Kano city.
Speaking on the development, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, confirmed the arrest and revealed that a senior palace official, ‘Shamakin Kano’ Alhaji Wada Isyaku, had also been summoned for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation into the attack.
“The police have commenced a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and have invited the Kano Emirate’s Shamakin Kano, Alhaji Wada Isyaku, for questioning,” Kiyawa stated.
The shocking attack comes amid heightened tensions in Kano following the ongoing power struggle between Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, both laying claim to the revered throne. In response to the volatile situation, the Kano State Police had, on Friday, placed a ban on the traditional Sallah procession in an effort to prevent any escalation of conflict.
This latest development has raised concerns over security within the emirate, as authorities continue their efforts to maintain peace and order in the ancient city of Kano.
