Goodluck Jonathan Warns: Suspension of Rivers Officials Could Damage Nigeria’s Global Reputation

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned that the suspension of elected officials in Rivers State could severely harm Nigeria’s international image and deter foreign investment.

Speaking at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday, Jonathan expressed concern over the ongoing political crisis, warning that such actions by key government actors cast the country in a negative light.

“These actions by key players in the executive and legislative arms of government paint the country in a negative light,” he stated, emphasizing the broader implications of political instability.

The former president, known for his measured approach to national issues, acknowledged that past leaders typically refrain from weighing in on political conflicts to avoid escalating tensions. However, he stressed that Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage—and its ability to attract critical investments—hinges on the conduct of the executive, legislature, and judiciary.

“The image of a country plays a crucial role in how much investment it attracts. Stability, accountability, and adherence to democratic principles are fundamental in maintaining investor confidence,” Jonathan added.

The Rivers State political crisis has drawn national attention, with fears that ongoing tensions could disrupt governance and development in the oil-rich region. Analysts warn that such instability, if left unchecked, could have far-reaching consequences for Nigeria’s economic and political landscape.

Jonathan’s remarks serve as a reminder of the importance of political stability and democratic integrity in fostering national growth and international credibility. His intervention adds to growing calls for a resolution to the Rivers crisis through dialogue and constitutional adherence.
