Power and Pretense: Goodluck Jonathan Condemns Abuse of Authority in Rivers Crisis

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has strongly criticized the ongoing political turmoil in Nigeria, particularly in Rivers State, describing it as a blatant abuse of power by the executive, legislative, and judicial arms of government.

Speaking at the Haske Foundation Colloquium 2025, Jonathan lamented the state of governance in the country, accusing those in power of deliberately ignoring their constitutional responsibilities.

“What is happening in Nigeria today, especially in Rivers State, is a clear abuse of power. The executive, legislature, and judiciary are all complicit, pretending as if they do not know the right thing to do. This continued disregard for justice and due process will have long-term consequences for everyone in the country,” Jonathan stated.

He further took a swipe at President Bola Tinubu and his political allies, accusing them of being “power drunk” and prioritizing personal interests over the nation’s well-being.

Jonathan’s remarks come amid escalating political tensions in Rivers State, where a fierce power struggle has plunged the state into uncertainty. Many analysts believe his warning is a call for urgent intervention to restore political stability and uphold democratic principles.

His speech has since sparked widespread debate, with many Nigerians questioning whether the nation is veering towards an era of unchecked authoritarianism.
