Bloodshed at Kogi-Enugu Border: Five MACBAN Members Killed, Three Missing in Brutal Attack

In a tragic escalation of violence at the Kogi-Enugu boundary, at least five members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) have been brutally murdered, while three others remain missing following a deadly ambush on Thursday, March 14, 2025.

The National Deputy Director General of MACBAN, Gidado Siddiki, confirmed the attack in a statement on Sunday, attributing the incident to Enugu State. However, the Enugu State Police Command clarified that the attack occurred at Eshi River, a notorious border point between Opanda community in Uzo-Uwani LGA, Enugu State, and Amaeke community in Igalamela-Odolu LGA, Kogi State.

Spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed that security operatives, including the police and military, responded swiftly to the scene and arrested two male suspects linked to the attack. He assured the public that joint efforts with Kogi State authorities are underway to track down other fleeing perpetrators.

Siddiki revealed that eight MACBAN members were initially reported missing after the attack. While the lifeless bodies of five victims have been recovered, the whereabouts of the remaining three remain unknown, fueling concerns over their fate.

Describing the slain herders as law-abiding citizens engaged in the legitimate business of cattle rearing, Siddiki lamented that MACBAN members have been unfairly targeted despite their contributions to economic growth in the South East. He drew parallels with the Igbo community’s presence in northern Nigeria, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence.

He urged the federal and state governments to launch a comprehensive investigation into the killings, identify the culprits, and ensure they face the full wrath of the law. Additionally, he called for proactive security measures to prevent further bloodshed and attacks on MACBAN members.

Expressing deep sympathy to the bereaved families, MACBAN offered prayers for the souls of the deceased and strength for their loved ones to endure the painful loss.

Siddiki further urged MACBAN members to remain calm and law-abiding, reminding them of their Islamic belief in divine destiny.

“We must exercise patience and allow the government to conduct a thorough investigation. Some suspects have already been apprehended, and we trust that justice will be served,” he assured.

As tensions simmer, the attack underscores the fragile security situation at border communities and the urgent need for decisive government intervention to stem the tide of violence.
