The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of a police inspector who allegedly took his own life while on special duty at Goodwill Ceramic Company in Igbesa, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.
The shocking incident occurred on March 14, 2025, at approximately 1:20 p.m., leaving many in disbelief over what could have led a serving officer to such a heartbreaking decision.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, the deceased officer has been identified as Inspector Ajele Oloyede, who was attached to the 78 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Zamfara State but was deployed for duty in Ogun.
Preliminary reports indicate that another officer, Tolorunloju Stephen, attached to the Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos, was also on special duty at the company when he discovered Oloyede in the security office.
Odutola explained that Stephen had just returned from Ikeja and found Oloyede with his head resting on a table. After exchanging pleasantries and inquiring about his well-being, Oloyede reportedly assured him that he was fine. However, moments later, tragedy struck.
As Stephen proceeded to the restroom, he suddenly heard a gunshot. Rushing back, he found Inspector Oloyede lying in a pool of blood, having allegedly turned his service rifle on himself.
“With the assistance of a private security officer, the wounded inspector was immediately rushed to Ota General Hospital, but sadly, the attending doctor confirmed him dead on arrival,” the police statement read.
The firearm used in the incident has been recovered, and Oloyede’s body has been deposited at the hospital for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
In response to the incident, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has ordered a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, including any signs of foul play or potential mental health struggles that the officer may have been experiencing.
“The police were swift in notifying the deceased officer’s family, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, for a discreet and comprehensive probe,” Odutola stated.
The Nigeria Police Force expressed deep condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of Inspector Oloyede.
“The command remains committed to the well-being of its officers and will ensure that all necessary support is provided during this difficult time,” Odutola added.
This tragic incident raises critical concerns about the mental health and well-being of law enforcement officers, who often work under extreme pressure. Many are now calling for improved psychological support systems within the police force to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
