Onitsha, Anambra State—A devastating auto crash at the bustling Upper Iweka axis of Onitsha has claimed six lives and left several others battling for survival after a truck lost control and plowed into pedestrians, tricycles, and a commercial bus filled with passengers.
The tragic accident, which occurred around 9 p.m. on Saturday, sent shockwaves through the commercial city as bystanders watched in horror. According to eyewitnesses, the speeding truck suddenly veered off course, ramming into multiple road users before coming to a halt amid cries for help and scenes of unimaginable devastation.
Confirming the incident, Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that security operatives had taken control of the area to restore order and commence investigations.
“The accident claimed the lives of six persons and left several others with varying degrees of injuries,” Ikenga said in a statement issued on Sunday. “Our immediate priority was to secure the scene, assist victims, and ensure the smooth flow of investigations.”
Emergency responders swiftly transported the injured to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving medical attention, while the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue. Authorities have also begun reaching out to the victims’ families.
While expressing condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery, the police warned motorists to conduct thorough vehicle checks before setting out on the road to prevent such fatal mishaps.
