Political Firestorm: Fubara Insists on Budget Presentation Amid Rivers Assembly Standoff

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has once again reached out to the State House of Assembly, notifying lawmakers of his intention to re-present the 2025 Appropriation Bill for consideration and approval. This move follows a dramatic standoff between the governor and the legislature, adding yet another twist to the ongoing power struggle in the state.

In a letter dated March 13, 2025, and addressed to Speaker Martin Amaewhule, Fubara stated his readiness to present the budget on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, or any other date within the month deemed suitable by the House. The letter, however, was laced with references to the bitter experience of his previous attempt to lay the budget before the Assembly.

A Showdown in Rivers Assembly

Recalling the chaotic events of March 12, Fubara expressed dismay over the lawmakers’ refusal to grant him access to the Assembly Quarters, where they were temporarily sitting. His entourage was locked out at the gate, despite prior notice of his visit and the delivery of a soft copy of the budget.

The governor emphasized that his decision to re-present the budget was in strict compliance with the Supreme Court judgment, which directed all arms of government to operate within their constitutional boundaries. He also noted that the Assembly had issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the budget’s presentation, even before his administration was officially served with a certified true copy of the judgment and accompanying orders.

In what appears to be an olive branch amid the escalating political tensions, Fubara urged lawmakers to put state development and the well-being of Rivers people above partisan disputes.

“No matter the depth of our differences, we believe the interests of the state and our people should take priority over political conflicts,” the governor stated.

Reaffirming his commitment to fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities, Fubara reiterated his intention to appear before the House on March 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., or any other date deemed appropriate.

The unfolding events in Rivers State signal a deeper constitutional crisis, with tensions between the executive and legislative arms reaching a boiling point. Will the Rivers Assembly finally grant Fubara audience, or will this power tussle take yet another contentious turn?

All eyes are now on March 19, as the political drama in Rivers State continues to unfold.
