In a bold call to action, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders has urged northern state governors to prioritize free education for girls and marginalized groups, emphasizing the need to bridge the region’s gender education gap. The coalition stressed that empowering young girls and adults eager to learn would foster greater participation in national decision-making, especially in politics and governance.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja to commemorate International Women’s Day 2025, the convener of the coalition, Victor Thompson, underscored the urgency of this demand. According to him, education is a catalyst for gender equality, and ensuring free education for girls would bolster the ongoing struggle for the 35% affirmative action for women in government.
“A well-educated girl-child today is a future leader. If northern governors take decisive action now, we will witness a surge in female participation in politics and national development,” Thompson asserted.
The coalition further called on President Bola Tinubu and all state governors to intensify efforts in appointing more women to strategic government positions, particularly at the grassroots level, ahead of the 2027 general elections. They argued that gender inclusivity in governance is non-negotiable if Nigeria is to attain sustainable development.
In a related development, the group urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to ensure fairness and justice in handling the case of the suspended Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. They emphasized that treating the case with diligence would not only uphold democratic values but also promote unity within the Senate.
As a formidable alliance of youth organizations from all 36 states, the coalition reaffirmed its unwavering support for women’s rights, particularly for those who have been silenced, harassed, or marginalized.
> “We stand with every woman who has lost her voice. We will continue to amplify the cries of genuine victims of harassment and abuse, ensuring that no woman suffers injustice in silence,” the group declared.
The coalition’s strong stance underscores the urgent need for policies that uplift women and ensure equal opportunities for all, particularly in education and governance.
