The announcement of his passing came through a heartfelt statement on Tuesday, signed by Mr. Emeka Onyia on behalf of the family.

> “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hon. Chief Dubem Onyia, a distinguished statesman and former Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. He passed away on Monday, following a brief spell of illness—surrounded by his family and loved ones.”

A man of immense intellect, deep patriotism, and unwavering dedication to public service, Onyia played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements on the global stage. His tenure as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs under former President Olusegun Obasanjo was marked by a resolute commitment to national interests, diplomatic excellence, and international cooperation.

Beyond government service, Onyia was a pillar of integrity, a mentor to many, and a compassionate leader who touched countless lives through his wisdom, generosity, and advocacy for good governance. He was deeply committed to Nigeria’s economic and geopolitical advancement, having served as:

Chairman of the Nigeria Economic Joint Commission

Chairman of the Sao Tome and Principe Joint Boundary Commission

His extensive career in public service and politics began in 1999 when he was elected to the House of Representatives. However, recognizing his greater calling, he stepped down to take up the ministerial position, where he left an enduring legacy.

A distinguished administrator and accountant, Onyia also chaired several corporate boards, served on critical government committees, and was a trustee of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation.

Born on February 23, 1952, in Enugu, Onyia’s academic journey took him through Ikeja District Primary School, Lagos; Fatima College, Ikire; and the College of Immaculate Conception, Enugu. These early years shaped the foundation of his illustrious career in leadership and public service.

Chief Onyia is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, numerous relatives, political allies, and friends who will forever cherish his legacy of service and impact. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

As Nigeria bids farewell to one of its finest diplomats, his contributions to the nation’s foreign policy and development will remain etched in history.
