Tragedy Strikes in Niger State: Drunk Police Officer Shoots and Kills Innocent Man

A tragic incident has unfolded in the Angwan-Kaje area of Maitumbi, Minna, Chanchaga Local Government Area, Niger State, as an unidentified Nigerian police officer, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, shot and killed a man named Sani. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 10, 2025, has left the community in shock and disbelief.

According to eyewitness accounts, Sani, who was unarmed and posed no threat, was fatally shot by the officer around 3 a.m. while he was resting. The intoxicated officer, recklessly firing his weapon, also targeted a tea seller known as Mai Shayi, who narrowly escaped the attack. “The officer shot him unlawfully while he was sleeping. He tried to shoot Mai Shayi as well, but he managed to run and avoid the bullets,” a source shared. Bullet shells were discovered at the scene, further corroborating the witnesses’ claims.

Sani, described by those who knew him as a peaceful and law-abiding citizen, had no connections to any criminal organizations or illicit groups. “He was a good person. He was not involved in any ‘Yan daba’ group, and he was always respectful,” a local resident revealed. His death has sent shockwaves through the community, sparking outrage over the senseless violence.

The Nigerian Police Force has launched an investigation into the incident. Wasiu Abiodun, the Public Relations Officer for the Niger State Command, confirmed the shooting, stating that the matter was reported promptly. “The Commissioner of Police has directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maitumbi to investigate and identify the officers responsible for this heinous act,” Abiodun said. “Appropriate action will be taken, and any developments will be communicated to the public in due course.”

This tragic event highlights the growing concerns over police brutality and the need for stricter accountability measures within the force. The community now awaits justice for Sani as the investigation unfolds.
