Women Affairs Minister Urges Dialogue, Calls for Justice
The suspension of Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has ignited a fierce backlash, with a powerful coalition of female leaders and rights groups threatening a showdown. The Federal Government, sensing the growing tension, has swiftly intervened, urging all parties to embrace dialogue and fairness.
Leading the government’s mediation efforts, Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has called for a balanced resolution, emphasizing the need to temper justice with mercy. Speaking on the matter, she reassured stakeholders that the government is actively engaging with all relevant parties to ensure a just outcome.
“This is a democracy, and no lawmaker should be unfairly victimized. We are working to ensure justice prevails while fostering harmony,” the minister stated.
Meanwhile, the Women in Management, Business, and Public Service (WIMBIZ) and other female advocacy groups have strongly condemned Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension, labeling it “unjust, undemocratic, and a direct attack on women’s political representation.” They warned that any attempt to silence her voice would be met with fierce resistance.
“We refuse to stand by while elected female leaders are unfairly targeted. This sets a dangerous precedent and must not be allowed to stand,” the coalition declared in a strongly worded statement.
With pressure mounting and tensions escalating, all eyes are now on the Kogi State Assembly and the Federal Government’s intervention. Will justice prevail, or will this be yet another case of political suppression? The coming days will reveal the answer.
