Nigeria has lost a formidable voice in the fight for justice and human rights as Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, widely known as Revolutionary Alfa, tragically lost his life in a fatal car crash along the Abeokuta-Sagamu road in Ogun State. He was 53 years old.
The accident occurred on Tuesday while Sulaiman was en route to Ibadan, marking a heartbreaking end to a lifetime dedicated to advocacy, social justice, and the defense of the oppressed.
At the time of his passing, Sulaiman served as the Executive Chairman of the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ) and also chaired the Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State (CSCEOS). A devoted disciple of the late legal luminary Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), he was a relentless champion of justice, known for his fearless activism and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals.
Throughout his decades of activism, he worked with several organizations, including the Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM), the National Conscience Party (NCP), the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), and the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN). His presence was a powerful force in Nigeria’s civil rights movement, amplifying the voices of the marginalized and holding authorities accountable.
Confirming the devastating news, Pastor Michael Agassi, Assistant General Secretary of CHRSJ, described Sulaiman as “a fearless and determined fighter whose impact on the struggle for justice and democracy in Nigeria cannot be overstated.”
He lamented that Sulaiman’s demise is a colossal loss not only for civil rights advocates but also for pensioners, civil servants, and everyday Nigerians, particularly in Southwestern Nigeria, where he tirelessly fought for justice.
“His death is not only a painful loss for civil servants and pensioners in Osun State but also a great loss to the downtrodden masses in the country. Our society has lost a rare individual with extraordinary humility and courage, as he dedicated himself to the welfare of the common people,” Agassi stated.
In line with Islamic traditions, Sulaiman was laid to rest on Thursday at the Abioye Ruling House/Compound in Awo, Egbedore Local Government Area of Osun State, after the Salat al-Asr prayers.
He is survived by two wives and children, leaving behind a legacy of resistance, courage, and an unshaken belief in a just Nigeria.
As the nation mourns this irreparable loss, tributes continue to pour in from colleagues, associates, and those whose lives he touched through his advocacy. His death is a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by those who dare to challenge injustice, yet his legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of activists.
May his soul rest in peace.
