Tragedy in Bauchi: 20-Year-Old Man Arrested for Bludgeoning Mother to Death

In a shocking act of domestic violence, the Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Safiyanu Dalhatu, for allegedly killing his mother, Salama Abdullahi, by striking her with a pestle. The gruesome incident, which occurred in the Abujan Kwata area of Bauchi metropolis, has sent shockwaves through the community.

Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying moment Dalhatu attacked his mother, inflicting severe injuries that led to her death. One resident, Walid Musa, confirmed the tragic event, stating, “He hit his mother with a pestle, and she died shortly thereafter.”

The police spokesperson in Bauchi State, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, disclosed in a statement on Tuesday that law enforcement swiftly intervened after being alerted by local Peace and Security Committee members.

According to Wakil, the incident was reported to the ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters at approximately 3:00 p.m. on February 24, 2025. Acting on the report, Divisional Police Officer CSP Abdullahi Muazu led a team of detectives to the scene, where they found the victim critically injured.

“The victim was immediately rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for medical attention, but unfortunately, she was later pronounced dead by medical professionals,” Wakil stated.

He further confirmed that the suspect had been apprehended and the pestle used in the fatal assault recovered as evidence.

Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Mohammed, has ordered a thorough investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

This shocking case adds to the growing list of domestic violence-related crimes in Nigeria, raising urgent concerns over mental health awareness and the need for proactive intervention by authorities. Experts have long advocated for increased access to mental health services and community-based conflict resolution mechanisms to curb such horrifying occurrences.

As investigations continue, the people of Bauchi—and the nation at large—await justice for the slain mother, hoping for measures to prevent future tragedies of this nature.
