Inferno on Ogun Highway: 16 Burnt to Death in Tragic Bus Explosion

A devastating accident on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway has claimed the lives of at least 16 people, who were burnt beyond recognition in a horrific bus explosion. The tragic incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Buhari Estate axis of the highway, sending shockwaves across Ogun State.

Confirming the harrowing event, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Spokesperson in Ogun State, Mrs. Florence Okpe, revealed that the lone accident involved a Mazda bus with registration number KJA 949 YJ. According to her, the deadly crash was triggered by a fire outbreak caused by a filled gas cylinder being transported inside the vehicle. The cylinder reportedly exploded, engulfing the bus in flames and leaving its occupants with no chance of escape.

“The crash involved 21 people, with 16 burnt to death and three others sustaining varying degrees of injuries,” Okpe stated. “The genders of the deceased could not be immediately identified as their bodies were completely charred.”

Emergency responders rushed the injured victims to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, while efforts were made to evacuate the remains of those who perished. FRSC Sector Commander, Akinwumi Fasakin, who personally led a rescue operation at the scene, expressed deep dismay over the incident.

“This is a tragedy that could have been avoided. The driver should never have allowed a highly combustible item like a gas cylinder to be transported in a passenger vehicle,” Fasakin lamented.

He reiterated the need for strict adherence to safety regulations, emphasizing that flammable substances must only be transported in designated vehicles operated by trained professionals.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the dangers of improper handling of hazardous materials and serves as a stark reminder for motorists to prioritize safety at all times.
