A somber mood enveloped the Kutunku area of Gwagwalada in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Saturday as a man, identified as Abdulrasheed Usman, tragically slumped and died while breaking his Ramadan fast.
The shocking incident occurred as Usman and three of his friends sat together on a bench, eating fruits to break their fast. According to an eyewitness, Suleiman Bala, everything seemed normal until Usman suddenly collapsed. His friends, in a frantic attempt to save his life, rushed him to a nearby hospital on a motorcycle, but upon arrival, the doctor on duty pronounced him dead.
Bala revealed that Usman had just returned from Kaduna at about 5:47 p.m. that evening. Without showing any signs of distress, he had joined his friends at their usual relaxation spot to break his fast. However, moments later, the tragic incident unfolded.
“One of his brothers said the deceased had just arrived from Kaduna and went to join his friends as usual. When the Maghrib prayer was called, they began to break their fast, and in the middle of it, he slumped and never got up again,” Bala recounted.
Following Islamic customs, Usman’s remains were laid to rest the same day.
The incident has left residents of the area in shock, serving as a painful reminder of the fragility of life. Meanwhile, the global Muslim community had commenced the annual Ramadan fast on Saturday after the sighting of the new crescent moon, marking a period of deep spiritual reflection and devotion.
