TERROR UNCHECKED: ENUGU WOMEN STAGE MASS PROTEST OVER RAPE, KILLINGS BY SUSPECTED HERDSMEN, ACCUSE SECURITY AGENCIES OF COMPLICITY

The women of Eha-Ohala in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State have taken to the streets in a desperate cry for justice, staging a massive protest against the relentless wave of terror unleashed upon their communities by armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

With tears in their eyes and anguish in their voices, the protesters—comprised of women from Mgbuji, Umujiove, and Abor autonomous communities—stormed the Nkalagu-Eha-Amufu-Ikem-Obollo-Afor Federal Highway at 8:30 a.m., bringing traffic to a standstill. Their demand? An end to the bloodshed, the rapes, and the unchecked invasion of their lands.

Chanting solidarity songs and wielding placards with messages condemning the attacks, the women accused security agencies of standing idly by while their homes are razed, their husbands slaughtered, and their daughters violated.

“Our women are being raped by Fulani herdsmen! Our husbands no longer go to their farms! Our sons are afraid to step outside! When we go to our farms, they beat us, rape us, and even insert sticks into our private parts!” one of the enraged protesters cried out in a viral video obtained by Sahara Reporters on Tuesday.

According to community sources, the crisis has escalated alarmingly, with over 150 people brutally killed and 28 farm settlements sacked and occupied by the suspected herdsmen between 2020 and 2025. The violent takeovers have forced thousands into displacement, worsening food insecurity and deepening economic hardship in the already struggling region.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Sahara Reporters’ attempts to obtain a response from the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, proved futile, as he failed to answer multiple calls. Similarly, the Enugu State government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, has remained eerily silent, with no official statement issued regarding the crisis or the protest.

As tensions continue to mount and residents live in constant fear, the question remains—how much longer will the people of Eha-Ohala endure this reign of terror before the government and security forces take decisive action?
