Ramadan and Fairness: Reps Member Warns Traders Against Price Hikes, Urges Kindness

As the holy month of Ramadan begins, Abdullahi Aliyu, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Interior, has called on grocery traders across Nigeria to refrain from exploiting consumers by inflating the prices of essential food items.

In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Sardauna Francis, Aliyu condemned the practice of arbitrary price hikes during Ramadan, describing it as a violation of Islamic principles and the spirit of the sacred month.

> “While we observe this spiritually significant period, I urge traders who increase the prices of goods and food items at the onset of Ramadan to desist from such exploitation. Instead, they should demonstrate the finest virtues of Islam—compassion, generosity, and fairness,” Aliyu stated.

The lawmaker, who represents the Musawa/Matazu Federal Constituency in Katsina South, emphasized that with the cost of essential food items showing signs of stabilization, traders should resist the urge to impose unnecessary financial burdens on the fasting population.

Aliyu further encouraged Muslims nationwide, as well as those in the diaspora, to use Ramadan as a period of self-reflection, spiritual renewal, and fervent prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity in Nigeria.

Describing Ramadan as a time for deep devotion and selflessness, he urged the faithful to uphold the fundamental pillars of Islam and embody values that foster social harmony and collective well-being.

“Ramadan is not just about fasting but about a conscious effort to become better individuals, to avoid all forms of wrongdoing, and to show kindness to fellow human beings. Let us extend generosity to those in need and pray for the progress of our great nation,” he added.

His call serves as a timely reminder for both traders and consumers to prioritize ethics, compassion, and the true essence of Ramadan—which is giving, not taking advantage of others.
