Kano Council Chairman Arrested for Allegedly Selling Land Meant for Mini Stadium

In a dramatic turn of events, the Chairman of Kiru Local Government Area in Kano State, Abdullahi Mohammed, has been arrested over allegations of illegally selling land originally designated for a mini stadium. The land, intended for the Kafin Maiyaki Mini Stadium, was reportedly sold to a private company for over ₦100 million, sparking outrage among residents and anti-corruption agencies.

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, which has been investigating the case, confirmed Mohammed’s arrest after uncovering shocking financial transactions linked to the sale. According to Daily Trust, the illicit deal saw payments made directly into Mohammed’s personal bank account—a blatant abuse of office that has raised serious concerns about corruption within the local government.

Further investigations revealed that a company, Mahasum, purchased the stadium land, transferring payments directly to Mohammed. In a startling revelation, the commission’s spokesperson, Kabir Abba Kabir, disclosed that the chairman’s account received a staggering ₦240 million between November 1, 2024, when he assumed office, and February 27, 2025—suggesting possible involvement in other dubious transactions.

Authorities have since recovered the embezzled funds, and sources say Mohammed is cooperating with investigators, exposing the names of accomplices involved in the fraudulent scheme. The case has sent shockwaves across Kano State, with calls for a broader probe into land allocations under the local government administration.

As the investigation unfolds, the arrest of Abdullahi Mohammed serves as yet another reminder of the deep-rooted corruption plaguing local governance in Nigeria. Will this case lead to a wider crackdown on corruption, or will it be swept under the rug? Only time will tell.
