Inferno at Nasarawa State University: Students’ Hostels Gutted as Fire Destroys Property

A raging inferno has engulfed students’ residential apartments at Angwan Lambu in Keffi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, leaving devastation in its wake. The fire, which broke out on Thursday evening, was reportedly triggered by an electrical fault following the restoration of power supply by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

According to eyewitnesses, the blaze started when students noticed thick smoke billowing from the roof of one of the hostels. Panic ensued as they rushed out for help, only to find themselves stranded, with no immediate assistance available to contain the flames.

By the time the Nasarawa State University, Keffi fire service arrived, the fire had already consumed a significant portion of the building. Speaking on the incident, Mr. Abashi Duniya Peter, head of the university’s fire service, confirmed that an electrical fault was the cause of the disaster.

“The fire was caused by an electrical issue. Even during our firefighting efforts, power supply was still on. Students should be cautious by switching off all electrical appliances when not in use and avoid sleeping while cooking, as these situations can lead to serious hazards,” he warned.

Despite their efforts, the inferno ravaged nearly half of the structure. “About 45% of the building has been destroyed, while 55% was salvaged. Almost four blocks of rooms have been completely consumed, though we managed to prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring houses,” Peter added.

One of the victims, Faith Akawu, recounted her harrowing experience, explaining how she and other students lost everything.

“I was in the opposite room when we heard a loud spark. We didn’t know how it started, but it came from an extension wire in one of the rooms. We lost everything—our clothes, books, and belongings—except for what we had on us at that moment,” she lamented.

The incident has left students displaced, with many now struggling to replace their lost possessions. The university authorities are yet to announce any relief measures, but affected students are calling for urgent support to help them recover from the tragedy.

This devastating fire serves as a stark reminder of the importance of electrical safety, particularly in student hostels, where faulty wiring and improper use of appliances can lead to catastrophic consequences.
