A fresh wave of terror has struck Okpekpe, a community in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, as suspected armed herdsmen ambushed and killed two farmers in a brutal attack on Monday morning.
The victims, identified as Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello, were reportedly on their way to their farms when they were attacked and left lifeless.
Confirming the tragic incident, the Edo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, revealed that the attack was reported by the Chief of Okpekpe at approximately 9:00 AM on Monday.
“The command received a report today at about 0900hrs from the Chief of Okpekpe that two of his subjects were attacked and killed in their farms by suspected herdsmen,” Yamu stated.
He further disclosed that a team comprising the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and mobile police officers stationed in Uzanu swiftly responded to the distress call, only to discover the lifeless bodies of the victims.
In response to the escalating insecurity in the region, the police command has beefed up security and intensified efforts to track down the perpetrators.
“We have reviewed security arrangements in the area to pursue the criminals and prevent a recurrence,” Yamu assured.
The gruesome murder of the two farmers has heightened fears among residents, who are now calling on both the Edo State Government and the federal authorities to take decisive action against the rising tide of attacks by suspected herdsmen.
As tensions continue to mount, the tragic incident serves as yet another grim reminder of the insecurity plaguing farming communities across Nigeria.
