In a bold display of compassion and leadership, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa marked his inauguration by granting clemency to 43 convicts in Ondo State. The announcement, made during his inaugural speech at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure, underscored his administration’s commitment to justice, mercy, and societal reintegration.
Speaking shortly after taking the oath of office alongside his deputy, Olayide Adelami, at 12:59 PM, Aiyedatiwa declared,
“Before I begin my address, let me quickly make this remark in commemoration of today’s inauguration. Having carefully reviewed the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, this administration, on December 24, 2024, considered the list of convicts deserving of clemency. Today, I am exercising the authority vested in me to grant pardon. A total of 43 individuals who had been sentenced or condemned for various offenses are hereby set free.”
This significant gesture highlights the governor’s intent to promote restorative justice and give reformed individuals a second chance at life.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, who emerged victorious in the gubernatorial election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), reassured the people of Ondo State of his unwavering dedication to governance, transparency, and economic growth.
“We assure you that the overwhelming renewed mandate you have freely given us comes with a huge burden of leadership, and we promise never to rest on our oars. My deputy and I solemnly pledge this day to lead with the fear of God and utmost dedication to the progress of our dear state. The welfare of our people, particularly the most vulnerable—the poor, the sick, and the marginalized—will remain our top priority.”
Looking ahead, Aiyedatiwa outlined his administration’s strategic plans for economic revitalization, emphasizing infrastructure, investment, and industrialization.
“In the next four years, we will work closely with investors and development partners to ensure that Port Ondo becomes a reality. Additionally, we will harness our vast bitumen deposits for both local use and export, generating significant revenue for the state.”
The inauguration ceremony attracted a host of prominent figures, including:
