In a swift operation, the Lagos State Police Command has rescued six children who were found abandoned in a building in the Ejigbo area of Lagos. The discovery, which has sparked widespread concern, was made following a distress report received by the police around noon on Tuesday.
According to the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the children—aged between 7 and 13—were found living alone under alarming conditions. The case was immediately escalated to the Gender Unit in Ikeja for further investigation and intervention.
“The children, aged between seven and 13 years, have been rescued and are currently in a protective shelter through the Ministry of Youth and Social Development,” Hundeyin confirmed, as quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria.
Preliminary investigations revealed that their mother had traveled abroad for medical treatment, leaving them under the care of a caregiver whose whereabouts remain unclear. Authorities are now working to contact the mother while continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the children’s abandonment.
The incident has raised questions about child welfare and the responsibilities of caregivers, with the police emphasizing their commitment to ensuring the children’s safety and holding any negligent parties accountable.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance in communities and the role of law enforcement in safeguarding vulnerable children. The police have urged residents to report any similar incidents promptly to prevent potential tragedies.
