June 12 Election: Babangida Finally Admits Abiola’s Victory in New Autobiography

In a stunning revelation, former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has finally admitted that the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola won the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Babangida’s long-awaited confession is contained in his newly launched autobiography, A Journey in Service, unveiled in Abuja on Thursday. The book, reviewed by former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, sheds light on one of Nigeria’s most controversial political decisions—the annulment of the June 12 election.

According to Babangida, Abiola, who ran on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), not only secured the majority of votes but also met the constitutional requirements for nationwide geographical spread, making him the rightful winner of the election.

“There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements,” Babangida admitted.

However, he described the annulment of the election as the most difficult decision of his career, a moment that has haunted Nigeria’s democratic history for decades.

Babangida also acknowledged former President Muhammadu Buhari’s posthumous recognition of Abiola, who was conferred with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), a title reserved for Nigerian presidents.

This revelation, coming three decades after the annulment, is expected to reignite debates over one of Nigeria’s most defining political episodes.
