Army Chief Vows to Reward Gallant Troops, Strengthen Counter-Terrorism Onslaught

Renowned security analyst and counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama has revealed that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has pledged to reward officers and soldiers who demonstrate exceptional gallantry in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations across the country.

During an operational tour of the Nigerian Army’s 3 Brigade in Kano State and 17 Brigade in Katsina State on Thursday, Oluyede commended the troops for their achievements in the ongoing Operation FANSAN YAMMA, an anti-banditry mission aimed at eradicating insurgents. He described their successes as a testament to their unwavering dedication and professionalism.

“I urge you to sustain the momentum and intensify the onslaught against terrorists and insurgents to ensure their total defeat,” Oluyede charged the troops.

Acknowledging the sacrifices of soldiers, the Army Chief assured them of adequate combat enablers to enhance operational efficiency. He also addressed the pressing issue of post-service welfare, particularly the challenge of housing for retired personnel.

To mitigate this, Oluyede announced plans to expand the Affordable Housing Ownership Option for All Soldiers (AHOOAS) Scheme, ensuring that more personnel secure homes before leaving active service. Furthermore, he emphasized that the Nigerian Army is actively working to improve barracks accommodation to enhance the welfare of troops and their families.

> “The government is committed to your well-being, but you must also reciprocate by maintaining your equipment and facilities to ensure durability and efficiency,” he urged.

As part of his visit, Oluyede inspected key military installations, including Bukavu Barracks in Kano and Natsinta Barracks in Katsina. He also received operational briefings from top military commanders, including:

Maj.-Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, GOC 8 Division/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA

Brig.-Gen. Babatunde Omopariola, Commander 17 Brigade

Brig.-Gen. Ahmed Tukur, who briefed him on the security situation in Kano State

Accompanied by senior officers such as Maj.-Gen. Robert Sinjen (Chief of Operations, Army), Maj.-Gen. Erema Akerejola (Chief of Logistics, Army), Maj.-Gen. Abdulkalifa Ibrahim (Commander Infantry Corps), Maj.-Gen. Mayerinso Saraso (GOC 1 Division), and Maj.-Gen. Ahmed Garba (Provost Marshal, Army), the COAS reaffirmed the military’s resolve to crush terrorist elements destabilizing the region.

A poignant moment of the visit was the laying of wreaths at the Heroes Wall of 17 Brigade Headquarters, a solemn tribute to fallen soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice for national security.

In a display of combat readiness, troops of 3 Brigade conducted an unarmed combat demonstration, showcasing their preparedness for close-quarters engagements.

With the Army Chief’s renewed commitment to rewarding gallantry and enhancing troop welfare, the Nigerian military is poised to sustain its relentless push against insurgency and banditry, reinforcing national security across volatile regions.
