Shock Escape: Two Suspects in Anambra Lawmaker’s Murder Vanish from Police Custody

In a dramatic turn of events, two suspects linked to the brutal murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, the late lawmaker representing Onitsha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, have escaped from police custody.

The shocking development was announced by Sahara Reporters on its official X handle, sparking widespread concern over security lapses within the Anambra State Police Command.

Confirming the escape, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed in a statement on Tuesday in Awka that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered an immediate manhunt for the fugitives.

Reacting to the embarrassing security breach, CP Orutugu mobilized a combination of human, operational, and intelligence assets to track down the fleeing suspects. He also ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident and disciplinary action against any officers found guilty of negligence.

“Upon receiving the report today, February 18, 2025, regarding the escape of the two murder suspects, the Commissioner of Police has deployed all necessary resources to ensure their immediate re-arrest,” Ikenga stated.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects were being escorted by police operatives during an operation to apprehend a receiver of stolen goods and recover vehicles used by the criminal gang. The mission initially yielded some success, with officers arresting the suspected receiver and recovering two stolen vehicles. However, in a shocking twist, the two murder suspects managed to escape during the operation.

“Unfortunately, while our operatives successfully arrested the receiver and retrieved two stolen vehicles, the two key suspects managed to flee the scene,” Ikenga revealed.

Amid growing concerns over police accountability, the Anambra State Police Command has assured the public that no effort will be spared in recapturing the fugitives. CP Orutugu emphasized that officers responsible for the escape will face severe disciplinary measures if found culpable.

“The Command is intensifying efforts to ensure the re-arrest of the suspects and remains on the offensive against all criminal elements in the state,” Ikenga reassured.

The dramatic escape raises serious questions about security protocols within the force, as residents and stakeholders demand swift action to bring the fugitives back into custody and ensure justice for the slain lawmaker.
