Osun Political Turmoil: APC Seizes 14 LG Secretariats, Sparks Controversy

In a dramatic turn of events, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken control of 14 local government secretariats across Osun State, igniting political tensions and raising concerns over the rule of law.

Vanguard Newspaper, via its official X handle, reported that on Wednesday, APC officials forcefully occupied the council secretariats in a strategic move to assert dominance over local governance structures. Some of the affected councils include Obokun, Ife-East, Odo-Otin, Atakumosa-West, Orolu, Ejigbo, Ifelodun, and Ilesa-West, among others.

Eyewitness reports indicate that police officers were stationed at certain local government areas, including Osogbo and Olorunda, yet failed to intervene in the takeover. However, some councils where the forceful occupation occurred were notably devoid of security presence at the time, raising suspicions about possible complicity or negligence by law enforcement agencies.

Reacting to the incident, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly strongly condemned the move, describing it as “illegal, undemocratic, and a blatant affront to the rule of law.”

“Today, members of the opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC), forcefully broke into local government secretariats across the state. This unlawful invasion is not only a direct attack on our democratic institutions but also a clear violation of the rule of law and a threat to public peace and order,” the Speaker declared while addressing journalists.

He further expressed outrage over the role of security agencies in the matter, stating, “Even more disturbing is the fact that security agencies, who are meant to uphold the law, were present while these illegal acts were being carried out. This is unjust, unlawful, and unacceptable. Law enforcement agencies must never be seen aiding and abetting criminal activities.”

This latest development adds to the ongoing power struggle in Osun State, where political rivalries between the APC and the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) continue to fuel uncertainty and conflict. The unauthorized occupation of government facilities raises legal and security concerns, with many calling on Governor Ademola Adeleke and federal authorities to restore order and prevent further escalation.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the Osun State government and security agencies to see how they will respond to this bold political maneuver by the APC. Will the law take its course, or will this set a precedent for further political turbulence?
