Adamawa Police Condemn Firearm Mishandling at LCCN Convention, Warn Hunters and Vigilantes Against Carrying Arms to Public Gatherings

The Adamawa State Police Command has strongly condemned the mishandling of firearms at the just-concluded Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN) National Convention in Demsa Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred on February 18, 2025, left eight individuals injured after a locally made firearm accidentally discharged during the event.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the mishap was caused by a member of the Hunters Association from Kukta Village, Song Local Government Area, who was providing security support at the convention. According to reports, the suspect was in possession of a dane gun—a locally manufactured firearm with no safety mechanism—when it accidentally fell to the ground and discharged sporadically, causing chaos and injuries among attendees. The injured victims were rushed to a medical facility in Demsa, where they are currently receiving treatment and reported to be in stable condition.

Following the incident, the suspect was immediately arrested, and a full-scale investigation is now underway to determine the circumstances leading to the negligence.

Police Command’s Stern Warning

Reacting to the incident, Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, PSC (+), issued a strict warning to hunters, vigilantes, and other local security outfits against carrying firearms—particularly those without safety features—to public gatherings. He emphasized that the Command will not tolerate any act that endangers public safety and security.

> “The use of unauthorized firearms at public events poses a significant risk to innocent citizens. Any individual or group found violating this directive will face decisive action in accordance with the law,” CP Morris stated.

He reassured residents of Adamawa State that the police remain committed to ensuring their safety and urged event organizers to liaise with law enforcement agencies for proper security arrangements, rather than relying on armed local security groups whose weapons may pose more danger than protection.

The Adamawa State Police Command called on the public to remain vigilant and report any unauthorized possession of firearms to law enforcement authorities. The Command reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining law and order while urging all security stakeholders to operate within the confines of the law.
