The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results for the 2024 second series of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, marking a significant improvement in overall performance.
According to a statement by WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, a total of 65,023 candidates sat for the examination, with 43,923 candidates (67.55%) securing credit and above in at least five subjects. Furthermore, 34,878 candidates (53.64%) attained credit and above in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, a crucial benchmark for university admission.
This year’s results indicate a 9.35% improvement compared to the previous years, where only 42.16% (2022) and 44.29% (2023) of candidates met the same criteria.
The examination was conducted across 5,067 centers nationwide in both paper-and-pen and computer-based formats, ensuring a seamless process. Gender distribution among candidates was nearly even, with 31,504 males and 33,519 females, giving females a slight edge at 51.55%.
WAEC disclosed that 95.90% of the results had been fully processed and released, while 4.10% remain pending due to submission errors. However, 2,577 candidates (3.96%) have had their results withheld over allegations of examination malpractice.
Candidates affected by the withheld results have been advised to seek redress through WAEC’s Notice of Examination Malpractice Portal for further investigation and possible resolution.
This year’s performance surge suggests a positive trend in private candidates’ preparedness and underscores WAEC’s continued commitment to upholding examination integrity and standards.
