ESUT Cracks Down on Corruption: Four Lecturers, Class Representative Suspended Over Money-for-Grades Scandal

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has taken decisive action against academic corruption by suspending four lecturers and a class representative indefinitely over allegations of extortion, popularly known as “sorting.”

The affected staff members, all affiliated with the ESUT College of Medicine (ESUCOM), were allegedly involved in soliciting payments from students in exchange for grade upgrades. According to the university’s Registrar, Mr. Ambrose Ugwu, the individuals are accused of colluding with class representatives who acted as intermediaries, collecting bribes to influence academic results.

Speaking to journalists over the weekend, Ugwu confirmed the suspensions, stating that they were necessary to uphold the institution’s integrity.

“In the College of Medicine, we have suspended four lecturers for soliciting payments from students to improve their results. Some class reps have been known to go around after exams, collecting small amounts from students in exchange for ensuring that the lecturers upgrade their marks. Consequently, four lecturers and the class representative have been suspended indefinitely. In the future, we may disclose additional details,” Ugwu revealed.

While the registrar did not disclose the names of the affected individuals, he hinted that more information could emerge as investigations continue.

This latest disciplinary action follows ESUT’s August 2024 dismissal of six lecturers over various offenses, including certificate forgery, sexual harassment, and grade manipulation. The university’s firm stance against misconduct underscores its commitment to preserving academic integrity and ensuring that merit remains the cornerstone of its grading system.

ESUT’s actions send a strong message to staff and students alike—corruption and malpractice will not be tolerated within its academic walls.
