The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has strongly refuted claims suggesting that its Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) does not last as long as fuel from the Dangote Refinery, describing the allegations as “misleading, false, and entirely unfounded.”
Taking to its official X handle, Channels Television reported NNPCL’s response to a viral video in which a content creator compared fuel efficiency between the two brands. The individual claimed to have purchased a litre of Dangote petrol from MRS filling station in Alapere, Lagos, at ₦925 and another litre from an NNPCL station in Ojodu Berger at ₦945. In his experiment, he alleged that the generator running on NNPCL fuel stopped after 17 minutes, while the one powered by Dangote petrol lasted 33 minutes.
However, NNPCL, through a statement signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, dismissed the claim as “unverified and amateur research” lacking professional oversight and credibility.
NNPCL emphasized that a significant percentage of the fuel sold at its Lagos stations—including the location where the content creator claimed to have purchased the fuel—was sourced from the Dangote Refinery itself.
“The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations made in a viral video circulating online, which claims that NNPC fuel does not last. This assertion is baseless and entirely unfounded, originating from unverified and amateur research that lacks credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight,” the statement read.
The company reassured Nigerians that its fuel undergoes rigorous quality control measures to ensure optimal efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability. It reiterated that both NNPCL and Dangote Refinery adhere to stringent industry standards, ensuring that the petroleum products supplied to consumers meet global benchmarks.
NNPCL condemned the video as a “desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to misinform the public and tarnish NNPC Ltd’s reputation.” The company warned that it would no longer tolerate the spread of deliberate falsehoods, vowing to take firm legal action against individuals or groups attempting to mislead Nigerians.
“We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to undermine our operations and mislead Nigerians. Henceforth, NNPC Ltd will take firm legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about our brand and operations. Those engaged in such malicious activities will be held fully accountable under the law,” the statement continued.
The company urged Nigerians to disregard the misleading video and rely on credible sources for accurate information, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring fuel availability, affordability, and quality while maintaining the highest industry standards.
With this stern warning, NNPCL has made it clear that any further attempts to spread misinformation about its operations will be met with serious legal consequences.
