Kenyan athlete Edwin Kibet Koech has once again stamped his dominance on the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, winning the 2025 edition after his remarkable triumph in 2023.
Kibet, known for his endurance and speed, clocked an impressive 2 hours and 14 minutes, securing the $50,000 grand prize in the men’s category. His latest victory solidifies his reputation as one of the most formidable marathoners on the African circuit.
The 2025 Lagos City Marathon witnessed an electrifying display of athleticism, with over 37,000 runners participating in both the 10km and 42km races. According to the event’s General Manager, Yusuf Ali, a retired Nigerian long jumper, the figure was derived from the distribution of running kits, out of the 60,000 registered participants.
The 42km race commenced at the National Stadium, Surulere, at 6:30 a.m., while the 10km marathon kicked off at the Grace Garden Event Centre, Lekki, at 9:30 a.m., with both races concluding at Eko Atlantic City—the heart of the competition’s grand finish.
Since its inception in 2016, the Lagos City Marathon has rapidly grown in prestige, now boasting a World Athletics Gold Label status. The organizers have their sights set on achieving the Platinum Label, which would make it Africa’s first marathon to attain that elite recognition.
Meanwhile, in preparation for the race, the Lagos State Government implemented an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion, affecting key routes between 5:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., ensuring smooth logistics and runner safety.
With Kibet’s back-to-back victories and the marathon’s continued rise in global ranking, the Lagos City Marathon is fast becoming a premier destination for elite athletes worldwide.
