…Police Establish Specialized GBV Desks in All Divisions to Enhance Victim Support and Swift Justice
In a landmark move to reinforce its commitment to human rights and justice, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has approved the expansion of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) desk offices to all police divisions across Nigeria. This strategic initiative is aimed at ensuring prompt, professional, and specialized intervention in GBV cases, bringing justice closer to survivors.
Previously limited to zonal and state commands, the GBV desk offices will now be present at the divisional level, making it easier for victims to access support and legal redress. To guarantee efficiency and professionalism, the IGP has mandated the appointment of dedicated GBV desk officers, who will undergo rigorous specialized training. These officers will be equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, and expertise to handle GBV cases with sensitivity, ensuring victims receive the protection and justice they deserve.
In a significant restructuring, these GBV desk officers will also oversee the Juvenile, Women, and Children (JWC) sections in their respective divisions. This integration fosters a holistic, victim-centered approach to addressing cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of abuse. The move underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable populations and strengthening its role in combating gender-based crimes.
The IGP urges all Nigerians to report incidents of gender-based violence, emphasizing that the police remain resolute in upholding justice and human rights without discrimination or bias. This expansion aligns with the force’s broader strategy to build public trust and ensure that justice is swift, accessible, and survivor-focused.
The Nigeria Police Force reassures citizens of its unwavering dedication to justice, urging victims to take full advantage of the newly established GBV desks for immediate support and intervention.
