Lagos Speakership Tussle: CHSR Urges Obasa to Accept Ouster, Back Meranda’s Leadership

The Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR) has called on former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, to accept his removal in good faith and refrain from any attempts to reclaim the position he held for nearly a decade.

Obasa was removed as Speaker on Monday, January 13, 2025, following a major leadership shift backed by an overwhelming majority of lawmakers. The CHSR, in a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, emphasized that the speakership is not a lifelong entitlement but a privilege conferred by fellow legislators.

CHSR President, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, underscored that the recent transition reflects democratic principles and the separation of powers, urging all parties to respect the will of the legislature.

“It would amount to a declaration of war on democracy to fuel unnecessary crises that impede legislative functions and governance in Lagos State,” Omotehinse stated.

Backing the emergence of Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda—the first female Speaker in over five decades—CHSR stressed that her leadership marks a progressive milestone for Lagos State, fostering inclusivity, transparency, and democratic growth.

The group further warned against external interference, urging stakeholders to shield Meranda from intimidation and covert attempts to undermine her authority.

Before his ouster, Obasa’s tenure was marred by allegations of corruption and abuse of office, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) launching an investigation under its former chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

“The former EFCC boss was determined to prosecute Obasa over these allegations before his removal from office,” CHSR stated.

The group cautioned against imposing Obasa as a perpetual Speaker, calling it a betrayal of democracy and a disservice to Lagosians.

“With a barrage of allegations against him, it would be an act of treachery for Obasa to return as Speaker. Instead of plotting a comeback, he must clear his name and respect the collective decision of his colleagues,” Omotehinse added.

CHSR to Stakeholders: Protect Meranda, Uphold Legislative Independence

CHSR reaffirmed that the selection of a Speaker is the prerogative of the House of Assembly members, urging them to stand firm behind Meranda and reject any attempts to manipulate the democratic process.

“Lagosians expect Obasa to give peace a chance and allow the new Speaker to preside without interference,” the statement continued.

The group also highlighted the historic significance of Meranda’s leadership, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen legislative independence and good governance in Lagos State.

“For the first time in over five decades, a woman is at the helm of LAHA’s leadership. This is a defining moment that must be protected from political sabotage,” CHSR warned.

As the Lagos Assembly resumes legislative duties after weeks of uncertainty, CHSR urged Meranda to remain focused, warning against detractors and power-hungry elements seeking to overturn the decision of the majority.

“Democracy must not be trampled or surrendered. The Speaker chosen by the majority must be allowed to lead without intimidation or harassment,” Omotehinse concluded.

With the power shift now sealed, all eyes remain on Speaker Meranda’s leadership as she steers the Lagos Assembly toward a new era of governance.
