Nigeria has lost one of its most formidable voices in the fight for democracy, justice, and equity. Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the revered leader of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State. He was 96.
The family confirmed his passing in an official statement, describing him as a tireless advocate for truth and a fearless champion of a just and progressive Nigeria.
“He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos home at the age of 96. We will forever cherish his commitment to fighting for truth, equity, and justice. His belief in and struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria were unwavering, and he pursued this cause until his last breath,” the statement read.
A distinguished lawyer and elder statesman, Adebanjo played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s political landscape. As a former Organising Secretary of the Action Group and a staunch disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he was instrumental in shaping the ideological foundation of progressive politics in the country. His leadership of Afenifere further cemented his legacy as a defender of Yoruba interests and a fierce critic of injustice.
Pa Adebanjo is survived by his beloved wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, aged 94, along with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who now carry forward his indelible legacy.
The family also disclosed that consultations are ongoing with friends, associates, and key stakeholders across Nigeria and beyond to organize a befitting funeral in his honor. Further details will be announced in due course.
A condolence register has been opened at his residence at 8, Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, as well as at his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, allowing mourners to pay their respects.
The statement was signed on behalf of the family by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo.
Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s passing marks the end of an era, but his ideals and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution will remain etched in history.
