A police officer, identified as Owolabi, has been arraigned in a Lagos court for allegedly sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl inside the Ogudu Area Command premises. The incident, which has sparked outrage, occurred on June 29 when the teenage victim visited the station to report her stolen phone.
According to reports, Owolabi lured the girl into his office under false pretenses before allegedly assaulting her sexually. Following an investigation, he was taken into custody and remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Facility on Tuesday. The court has adjourned the case to March 11, pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Reacting to the development, Mrs. Adejoke Ladenegan-Oginni, Head of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), praised the swift legal action taken against the officer. She reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s unwavering stance on sexual violence, emphasizing that justice must prevail.
“We commend the judiciary for handling this case with the seriousness it deserves. This sends a strong message that no one is above the law, and perpetrators of sexual violence will be held accountable,” Ladenegan-Oginni stated.
She further urged the public to remain vigilant and report any cases of sexual or domestic violence.
“We encourage everyone to speak up. If you see something, say something—your voice can be the key to ensuring justice is served,” she added.
The case has intensified calls for police reform and accountability, with many advocating for stricter measures to prevent abuse of power within law enforcement agencies.
