Bribery Scandal Rocks Nasarawa Police: Officers Summoned Over Release of Murder Suspect

The Nasarawa State Police Command is embroiled in a bribery scandal following allegations that officers at the Aso A Police Station released a murder suspect after collecting a bribe. The State Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has summoned the officers implicated in the scandal for questioning.

The controversy stems from the killing of a young labourer, Joshua Moses, at a construction site in Gidan Rago, Aso B, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. According to sources, Joshua was attacked by a gang demanding illegal levies from workers at the site. An argument ensued, escalating into violence, during which one of the gang members fatally stabbed Joshua.

Eyewitnesses reported that the suspect was immediately apprehended by police officers from the Aso A Police Station. However, in a shocking turn of events, the suspect was later released under suspicious circumstances.

A family source disclosed that the gang leader, known as ‘Mai Angwa,’ allegedly negotiated the suspect’s release by bribing the officers involved.

“After negotiating with the police, an undisclosed amount of money was handed over in cash, and the accused regained his freedom. Later, the same officers falsely claimed the suspect had escaped, pretending to be unaware of his whereabouts,” the source alleged.

The family specifically accused the Investigative Police Officer (IPO), Clement Usman, and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the station of complicity in the suspect’s release.

Following the damning report by SaharaReporters, the Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, swiftly intervened, ordering an investigation into the case.

“We heard that the CP had summoned Clement Usman and the DPO to report to the state headquarters,” a family source confirmed.

Meanwhile, efforts by SaharaReporters to obtain an official statement from the Nasarawa State Police Command have so far been unsuccessful, as the command’s spokesman, SP Ramhan Nansel, has not responded to calls or messages.

However, speaking to journalists shortly after the report surfaced, Nansel confirmed that the Commissioner of Police had summoned the officers involved and directed a full investigation into the matter.

This incident has sparked outrage among human rights activists, who are calling for a transparent investigation and justice for Joshua Moses. The case is expected to test the credibility of the Nasarawa State Police Command in handling corruption within its ranks.
