In a chilling development, gunmen have abducted the President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, in Owerri, the Imo State capital. The shocking incident, which has sent waves of fear across the region, was confirmed by Sahara Reporters via its official X handle.

Brazen Abduction in Broad Daylight

Eyewitnesses recount that Igboayaka was forcibly taken on Saturday evening near Work Layout, close to IMSU Junction, by heavily armed assailants who arrived in a Sienna and a Lexus SUV. The daring nature of the abduction has raised concerns about the worsening security situation in Imo State.

Following the abduction, desperate efforts by members of the Ohanaeze Youth Council, family, friends, and associates to contact Igboayaka have proved futile, as all his mobile lines remain switched off.

President of the Igbo National Council (INC), Chilos Godsent, confirmed the unfortunate incident, describing it as a “worrisome development that must not be taken lightly.” He urged security agencies to act swiftly to ensure the safe return of the OYC leader.

Reacting to the development, Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to track down the kidnappers and rescue Igboayaka. He also dispelled rumors suggesting that the youth leader was arrested by security operatives.

Meanwhile, the Igbo National Council (INC) has called on the Imo State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts in identifying those responsible for this disturbing act, stressing that the abduction of a high-profile youth leader could heighten tension in the region.

With insecurity on the rise in the South-East, this latest abduction underscores the urgent need for decisive action against criminal elements terrorizing the region. The fate of Igboayaka O. Igboayaka now hangs in the balance, as his family, colleagues, and the entire Igbo community anxiously await his safe return.
