SERAP Sues President Tinubu Over N167 Billion Contract Scandal, Demands Prosecution

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken legal action against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the federal government’s failure to prosecute contractors who allegedly received over N167 billion from the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) and 30 other ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) without executing any projects.

In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, SERAP announced:

“BREAKING: We’ve sued President Tinubu over the failure to prosecute the contractors who collected over N167 billion from the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) and 30 other MDAs but failed to execute any projects.”

The organization’s lawsuit seeks to compel the Tinubu administration to take immediate action against the alleged fraudulent contractors, recover the misappropriated funds, and ensure accountability within the government’s procurement process.

This legal move comes amid growing public outrage over corruption in government contracts and the lack of consequences for defaulters. Transparency advocates have repeatedly called for stringent measures to curb the misuse of public funds, emphasizing that impunity only deepens Nigeria’s economic struggles.

As the case unfolds, all eyes are on the judiciary to determine whether the legal system will rise to the occasion and enforce accountability or if this will be yet another high-profile corruption case swept under the rug.
