The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the detention of a 10-year-old boy, Bright Okon James, following allegations that he defiled a 3-year-old girl. The police insist that due process is being followed despite public outcry over his detention.
In a statement released on Saturday in Uyo, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, clarified that Bright James was taken into custody after credible reports linked him to the alleged crime. She dismissed claims that his detention was unlawful, revealing that the minor voluntarily admitted to the offence.
“To set the records straight, the Command wishes to clarify that the said minor was taken into custody following allegations of defilement of a 3-year-old girl (name withheld). The case is currently under investigation, and findings, including a medical report, have provided evidence of the incident,” DSP John stated.
She further disclosed that James would be formally charged in court on Monday, February 10, 2025. The PPRO assured that the investigation was being handled professionally and refuted claims of any extrajudicial treatment.
“Furthermore, the Command categorically states that there was no trial by ordeal in this matter. Such practices are criminal under Nigerian law, and the Police strongly condemn any form of extrajudicial actions,” she asserted.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to justice, DSP John urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation, emphasizing that the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, remains steadfast in upholding the rule of law.
The case has sparked intense debate over the legal handling of juvenile offenders in Nigeria, raising concerns about the appropriate balance between justice and child protection laws. As the court hearing approaches, all eyes will be on the judiciary to determine the fate of young Bright James in a case that has gripped the nation.
