OGONI PEOPLE HAIL FG FOR ACCEPTING TERMS TO RESUME OIL EXPLORATION, CALL FOR UNITY IN DEVELOPMENT DRIVE

The Ogoni people of Rivers State have applauded the Federal Government for accepting and commencing the implementation of key conditions proposed for the resumption of oil exploration in their region.

The Congress of Ogoni People (COP), in a landmark gathering attended by over 10,000 Ogonis at the Peace and Freedom Centre, Bori, reaffirmed their commitment to constructive dialogue with the government. The event culminated in the adoption of a six-point resolution signed by prominent figures, including Prof. Don Baridam, Archbishop Ignatius Kattey, and Barrister Tom Orage.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Don Baridam, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, acknowledged the unwavering support of President Bola Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, for facilitating the dialogue process. The congress expressed confidence in the federal government’s commitment to addressing Ogoni’s long-standing economic and environmental concerns.

Major Achievements Highlighted

The congress particularly commended the government for implementing crucial measures aimed at fostering trust and sustainable development in Ogoniland, including:

✅ Establishment of the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni – A transformative milestone that will enhance environmental and educational advancements in the region.

✅ Acceleration of the Eleme Junction to Onne Junction road project – A long-awaited infrastructural boost expected to improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth.

✅ Affirmative action in federal employment – Ensuring greater inclusion and representation of Ogoni sons and daughters in key national institutions.

✅ Increased federal intervention in Ogoni infrastructure – With critical projects included in the national budget and additional support from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The COP urged all Ogoni sons and daughters, regardless of political or ideological affiliations, to unite in supporting the ongoing dialogue, emphasizing that this moment presents an opportunity to reshape Ogoni’s future.

“We believe that continued engagement and constructive discussions will lead to lasting solutions that will benefit our people and future generations,” the resolution stated. “This is a defining moment for Ogoniland, and our collective effort is crucial in achieving meaningful progress.”

With optimism rekindled, the Ogoni people remain steadfast in their demand for justice, sustainable development, and the responsible exploitation of their natural resources.
