Tragedy on the 2nd Niger Bridge: Security Operatives Recover Body of Kidnapped Anambra Lawmaker, Intensify Manhunt for Killers

In a grim turn of events, a joint security team has taken control of the 2nd Niger Bridge following the discovery of the decomposing body of Hon. Justice Azuka, a kidnapped member of the Anambra State House of Assembly.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the tragic development on Thursday, revealing that security operatives have launched a full-scale manhunt for the lawmaker’s killers.

Ikenga stated, “In the early hours of today, February 6, 2025, at the Second Niger Bridge, a joint security team comprising police officers and Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) operatives, who were on a rescue mission for Hon. Azuka, regrettably discovered his lifeless body at the scene. The area has been secured, and an intensive operation is ongoing to track down those responsible for this heinous crime.”

The discovery has heightened security concerns in Anambra State, especially as criminal activities escalate across the region.

Sahara Reporters had previously broken the story that Azuka’s abduction on December 24, 2024, sent shockwaves through the state. Gunmen had kidnapped the lawmaker on Ugwunaobankpa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha, while he was returning home.

Azuka, a Labour Party (LP) chieftain, had recently reclaimed his mandate after a court ruling nullified the victory of Hon. Douglas Egbuna of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections. His assassination raises concerns about political violence and security vulnerabilities in Nigeria’s southeastern region.

With the security team now in control of the 2nd Niger Bridge, authorities are intensifying efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding Azuka’s murder and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Anambra State government, security agencies, and the lawmaker’s party have yet to release official statements regarding the incident. However, tension continues to mount as residents demand urgent action to curb rising insecurity in the region.

This tragic incident underscores the growing dangers faced by politicians, public figures, and citizens alike as criminal elements continue to exploit security lapses across Nigeria.
